Libyan officials rescue more than 160 African migrants

More than 160 African migrants were rescued by the Libyan coastguard on Saturday (May 6).
The migrants were found off the north east coast of Tripoli and were taken to a naval base in the Libyan capital where they received medical care, before being transferred to a police station.
Libya is the main departure point for migrants hoping to reach Europe by sea, with more than 150,000 having made the crossing from Libya to Italy in each of the past three years.
Smugglers put most of the migrants in flimsy inflatable dinghies that get picked up by rescue ships and other vessels once they reach international waters. Some are intercepted and turned back by the Libyan coastguard.
