Abuja – Various reactions and signals which have arisen as a result of deployment of military personnel to quell agitations of the Indigenous People of Biafra in the South East, may have unsettled the Presidency, prompting an urgent meeting between the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim and the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.
Both personalities were locked in a meeting for hours behind closed doors at the Villa on Thursday, after which the IG fielded questions from State House correspondents.
The IG gave indications that there are plans to deploy more police officers across the country to maintain law and order, just as moves were on to mobilise the state governors from the South East region to urgently intervene in the face off between the military and IPOB.
He debunked insinuations that there was tension in the country owing to the IPOB,military clash.
He said,â€The highlight of the meeting with Vice President is to obviously ensure that our provision of security in the country is intactâ€.
On developments in the South East and strategies on ground at the moment, the IG said,â€obviously, one is to deploy policemen across the country, two we are in touch with the states government, trying to mobilize the political leadership to be able to intervene where necessary on how to lessen the tension in the south east.
“I don’t think there is tension in the country. Which country, this Nigeria? No. Nigeria does not have tension. At least you are in Abuja you have gone around there is no tensionâ€.
Idris also wrote off allegations credited to Rivers State Governor,Nyesom Wike that police officers attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were aiding and abetting crimes in the state.
He said such allegations were baseless adding that Wike was only expressing his personal views based on his immunity as governor of the state.
He said it may have been a mere coincidence that a police officer lost his live in the cime scene but that could not pass for a general statement by the governor that police officers were criminals.
“Wike has right to self expression. You know he is a governor,â€the IG said.
Asked if he was denying the allegation or reaffirming it, he said,â€Of course I have to deny it, that is nonsense. I have to deny that.
“If a policeman was killed will you say he was involved in crime? I think you are mixing two different issues. A policeman was killed in Rivers in connection with this IPOB issue, is different from saying that policemen are involved in crime. You cannot say someone that was attacked and killed is the one involved in crime.
“Who is the person they were attempting to kidnap? I just want you to read between the lines. If you have leaders making sweeping allegations obviously it does not make sense. I don’t want to comment on itâ€.
Wike had within the week, alleged that the Rivers State SARS commander and his operatives have been indicted by an official police signal, which indicated that they were responsible for the series of kidnapping and deadly robbery across the state.
“I want to let you know that those who believe and serve God with their heart will be victorious at the end. I wrote to the Inspector General of Police about certain security personnel in the state.
“On the 11th of this month some people went to a residence to kidnap somebody. The victims were driven in a vehicle to bank to withdraw the sum of N500,000 ransom,â€Wike had alleged.
